why therapists are taking less insurance

There are several articles to find on why therapists are taking less insurance and moving towards private counseling. Investing in private therapy is your path to wellness and integration. There can be plenty of therapists available in certain parts of the country, but many of us have waiting lists, as well as limited times to see clients. When there is a mutual agreement between client and therapist, and the client invests in their improvement both financially and emotionally, the outcomes can be more favorable.

Some of the benefits of paying privately for counseling sessions, versus using health insurance include:

  1. No need for a mental illness diagnosis, plus medical necessity can be hard to define and prove to insurance companies. You could also be labeled as having a pre-existing condition.

  2. Couples therapy is not always covered or reimbursed by insurance. Couples counseling is not always covered by the Mental Health Parity Act.

    3. Due to the fact that I provide services in Arizona and Oregon, as well as other places in the World, it can be difficult to manage and panel with every insurance company. I did so for many years, but found that managing all the claims and documentation took more time away from counseling sessions.
